Hot Air and High Pressures: We Didn’t Replace the Compressor — Here’s Why
Too much refrigerant can cause A/C problems. This real-world repair at PROFIX Auto Repair in Norman shows how overcharging a 2007 Lincoln Town Car led to high pressures and poor cooling.
Oklahoma summers don’t play around, and neither does a 2007 Lincoln Town Car when its air conditioning decides to quit. Our customer brought his vehicle to our Rambling Oaks location of PROFIX Auto Repair with a clear complaint: the AC was blowing hot air, making strange sounds, and it felt like air was also coming out from under the vehicle.
A lot of shops would have started quoting compressors, condensers, orifice tubes, and accumulators on the spot. But here at

What the Gauges Actually Showed
Technician findings were straightforward:
- High-side pressure was borderline high
- Low-side pressure was too high
- The system was overcharged by about a pound
- Center vent temp only dropped 10 degrees
That combination is typical to an overcharged system. Too much refrigerant raises pressures on both sides, reduces the system’s ability to transfer heat properly, and can create odd noises as the compressor and expansion devices struggle. The “air coming from under the vehicle” sensation and the strange sound aligned with the increased pressure.
We also confirmed the control head was working and the mode actuator was moving correctly, so the HVAC box itself wasn’t the primary issue.
After recovering excess refrigerant, adding dye to check for leaks, replacing the service valves, and recharging to the correct specification, the system came into proper pressure. The vent temperature improved significantly and no active leaks were found.
Why This Matters
Adding too much refrigerant the A/C system is more common than most people think. It usually happens when a previous shop (or someone with a DIY can) keeps adding refrigerant until the air “feels” colder for a few minutes, without ever measuring and adjusting to the vehicle’s exact specified capacity. Every vehicle has a precise refrigerant charge it needs—no more, no less. When that amount is exceeded, you get exactly what our customer experienced: warm air and a system that simply can’t cool effectively.
