2017 Tesla Model S 90D Driver's Seat Wouldn't Return Upright: Seat Calibration at PROFIX
A 2017 Tesla Model S 90D came to Leon's PROFIX Auto Repair in Norman, Oklahoma, because the driver's power seat would recline backward but stop before returning to a proper upright position. After reproducing the problem, our technician used Tesla Service Mode to calibrate both front seats and confirmed normal operation without replacing any parts.
The Driver's Seat Would Recline, but Not Return Upright
Power seats are supposed to make finding a comfortable driving position easy. On this 2017 Tesla Model S 90D, however, the driver's seat had developed a frustrating problem.
The seat would tilt backward, but when the driver tried to bring it forward again, it would stop before reaching a proper upright position.
Our technician was able to reproduce the complaint several times, confirming that the seat wasn't simply behaving differently because of a saved driving position.
The next step was determining what was actually stopping the movement.
Listening for the Seat Motor to Stop
During testing, our technician noticed something important. When the seat stopped moving, he could hear the seat controller shutting off the tilt motor. The seat was responding to adjustment commands, but its movement was being stopped before reaching the desired position.
That observation helped distinguish the problem from a completely inoperative motor or adjustment switch. Our technician determined that the switch itself was functioning and proceeded with a calibration approach rather than replacing components.
On a modern vehicle, a motor that stops moving doesn't necessarily mean the motor has failed. The electronic systems controlling that motor are part of the diagnostic picture, too.
Calibrating the Front Seats Through Tesla Service Mode
With the vehicle in Tesla Service Mode, our technician unlocked the gateway and performed the front-seat calibration routines for both the driver and passenger seats.
These procedures involve electronically controlled seat movement. As the calibration runs, the seat physically changes position while the vehicle performs the requested routine.
The video below shows the passenger-seat portion of the calibration process on this Model S. You can see Tesla's service interface displaying the calibration procedure while the seat moves.
Testing Confirmed Normal Seat Operation
After completing the calibration procedures, our technician tested seat travel through all available adjustment modes.
The result? The seat is operating normally again. No replacement seat motor, adjustment switch, or seat assembly needed. The concern was resolved through calibration followed by functional testing to verify the result.
One thing worth mentioning: Following this type of service, the owner may need to reset saved Easy Entry and driving positions to their preferred settings.
Sometimes the Right Repair Doesn't Require a New Part
This Tesla is a good example of why understanding a problem matters before deciding what to replace.
A power seat that stops moving might initially seem like a failed motor or switch. But on this Model S, the technician's observations and subsequent calibration led to a successful result without replacing hardware.
As vehicles become increasingly dependent on electronic controls and software-based service procedures, diagnosing how those systems operate is an important part of automotive repair.
