CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON IN NORMAN?
Don’t Panic — Get Fast Check Engine Light Diagnostics at PROFIX in Norman and Save Money

That little yellow light on your dashboard can make your stomach drop, right?
One minute you're cruising down Main Street or heading out toward Lake Thunderbird, and suddenly your check engine light pops on. It’s easy to panic and wonder if your car is about to leave you stranded.
The good news? The check engine light doesn’t always mean a huge, expensive repair. Sometimes it’s something simple you can handle quickly. At PROFIX Auto Repair in Norman, we see this all the time at both of our locations.
Here are some common reasons the check engine light comes on:
- Loose or damaged gas cap — Believe it or not, this is one of the top culprits. If the cap isn't tight or the seal is cracked, it can mess with your fuel system's pressure and trigger the light. Next time it happens, safely pull over, tighten the cap until it clicks a few times, and drive a bit to see if the light goes off after a couple trips.
- Faulty oxygen sensor — Your O2 sensors monitor how much oxygen is in the exhaust. When one starts failing (common in Oklahoma's heat and stop-and-go traffic), your engine runs less efficiently, fuel mileage drops, and the light comes on. Ignoring it too long can hurt your catalytic converter.
- Spark plugs or ignition coils — Worn plugs or bad coils can cause misfires. You might notice a rough idle or hesitation when accelerating, especially in hotter months when engines work harder.
- Mass airflow sensor issues — This sensor tells your engine how much air is coming in. If it gets dirty or fails (Norman dust and pollen don't help), the engine can run too rich or too lean.
- Catalytic converter problems — This one is more serious and usually shows up after other issues have been ignored. You might smell rotten eggs or notice reduced power.
Other possibilities include vacuum leaks, bad EGR valves, or even issues with hybrids and EVs (yes, we see those too even on Tesla and other electric vehicles).
What should you do when the light comes on?
Don’t ignore it, but don’t panic either. If the light is solid (not blinking), it’s usually okay to drive to us safely. A blinking light often means a misfire that could damage the catalytic converter — get it checked right away.
The best next step is a proper diagnostic scan. We plug in and read the trouble codes stored in your car’s computer. That tells us exactly where to look instead of guessing. Many times we can fix it same-day or the next day without any pressure.
Living in Norman means dealing with everything from our hot summers to occasional rough roads and temperature swings. These conditions can speed up wear on sensors and other components, so catching things early saves you money and headaches down the road.

Whether you drive a traditional gas vehicle, a hybrid, an EV, or even a Tesla, we’ve got the tools and experience to handle it at both of our convenient Norman locations.
