Ford F-250 Ball Joint & Suspension Repair in Norman, OK

When an older heavy-duty truck starts developing front-end noise, looseness, or a rough ride, there can be more than one worn suspension component involved. That was the case with this 2004 Ford F-250 Super Duty that recently came into PROFIX Auto Repair in Norman, Oklahoma with more than 167,000 miles on the odometer.

During our inspection, we found several issues in the front suspension that needed attention, including
worn upper and lower ball joints on both sides, a leaking front shock, and deteriorated leaf-spring bushing material.

What We Found During the F-250 Inspection

The customer reported that the truck was riding rough and that there was noise coming from the front end. Our technician inspected the suspension and found play in both the upper and lower ball joints on the left and right sides.


Ball joints connect the steering knuckle to the suspension while still allowing the wheels to move up and down and turn with the steering. Because they carry substantial loads on a truck like an F-250, wear can eventually create looseness in the front suspension.


We also found that the left front shock was leaking. In addition, material from the left front leaf-spring bushing/insulator was missing, allowing portions of the spring assembly to contact each other.



Those findings explained why this truck needed more than a simple shock replacement.

Replacing Upper and Lower Ball Joints on a Ford F-250

On this truck, all four front ball joints — both upper and lower ball joints on both sides — were replaced.


Ball-joint replacement on an F-250 is a substantial front-end repair. The wheel and brake components have to be removed and the steering knuckle disassembled far enough to access the ball joints.



This is also why diagnosing front-end noise before simply replacing parts is important. Several suspension and steering components can produce similar symptoms, particularly on an older truck with higher mileage.

Once the suspension was apart, our technician could remove the worn ball joints and install the new components.


Excessive ball-joint play can contribute to symptoms such as:

  • Clunking or knocking from the front suspension
  • Loose or wandering steering
  • Uneven tire wear
  • Steering that feels less precise
  • Noise when traveling over bumps
  • Excess movement in the wheel and suspension



On a heavy vehicle such as an F-250 Super Duty, keeping these components in good condition is especially important because of the weight and loads the suspension is designed to handle.

Addressing the Rest of the Suspension

The ball joints weren't the only suspension repairs performed on this F-250.


The truck also received new front shocks and rear shocks, along with repair of the worn front leaf-spring bushing/insulator that we found during the initial inspection.


Replacing worn shocks helps restore control of suspension movement. Although shocks don't support the vehicle's weight, they help control how quickly the suspension moves after hitting bumps, dips, or uneven pavement.



On a truck that has accumulated more than 167,000 miles, looking at the suspension as a complete system is important. Replacing one obviously failed component while ignoring another worn part nearby can leave the customer with many of the same ride or handling complaints afterward.

Why an Alignment Comes After Ball Joint Replacement

After replacing the ball joints and completing the suspension work, the F-250 received a wheel alignment.


Any time components that affect suspension or steering geometry are replaced, alignment should be checked and corrected as necessary. Proper alignment helps the truck track correctly and protects the tires from premature or uneven wear.


That is especially important after extensive front suspension work such as replacing the upper and lower ball joints on both sides.
