2020 Ford Fusion Transmission Replacement: From Sputtering Breakdown to Smooth Driving Again

Philip Defatta • August 11, 2026

At Leon’s PROFIX Auto Repair in Norman, OK, we love helping customers avoid those sky-high dealer repair bills. Recently, a client brought in her 2020 Ford Fusion SE after it suddenly sputtered and died on her. She had it towed to the dealership first, but the quote was more than she wanted to spend. That’s when she came to us.

Our team hard at work getting this 2020 Ford Fusion back on the road.

The Problem

Our client told us her Fusion stopped moving after sputtering badly. These symptoms are unfortunately common with certain Ford Fusion models — especially around the 40k–80k mile range. Many owners report similar issues with the 6F35 or similar automatic transmissions: hesitation, shuddering, slipping gears, or complete failure.

When our technician performed the initial inspection, we confirmed the transmission needed replacement. We also noted the oil sticker was overdue and the engine oil was dirty (always a good reminder to stay on top of routine maintenance!).

The Repair Process

We replaced the transmission with a quality used OEM assembly.  Here’s what the job involved:

  • Removal and installation of the transmission assembly
  • Drain and refill of transmission fluid
  • Transmission cooler flush
  • Full programming of the new transmission control module (a critical step for proper shifting and long-term reliability)
  • Thorough test drive to verify everything operated smoothly with no abnormal noises or leaks

The entire process took about 2–3 days, and the vehicle drove great afterward. We also performed our comprehensive 27-point inspection to make sure no other issues needed our attention.

Our team performing the transmission programming and final checks.

Why Ford Fusions Can Have Transmission Issues

The 2020 Fusion (and similar model years) uses a transmission that’s sensitive to fluid condition and heat. Skipping regular fluid changes or driving in hot Oklahoma summers can accelerate wear. Catching problems early — or doing a full replacement with proper programming — can save you from repeated failures.

Total Investment

This was a significant repair, but our client left with a reliable vehicle at a much more reasonable price than the dealership quote. We pride ourselves on transparent pricing and using quality parts without the dealer premium markup.

Tips for Fusion Owners

  • Stay on top of transmission fluid changes (check your owner’s manual for intervals).
  • Don’t ignore warning signs like shuddering, delayed engagement, or unusual noises.
  • If your Fusion is nearing higher mileage, a proactive inspection can prevent a roadside breakdown.
