2021 GMC Sierra 1500 Transmission and 4WD Fluid Service in Norman, OK
See how we serviced the transmission, filter, front and rear differentials, transfer case, and induction system on a 2021 GMC Sierra 1500 at PROFIX Auto Repair in Norman, OK.
A 2021 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT with the 5.3-liter V8 and four-wheel drive recently came into our Norman, Oklahoma auto repair shop for a comprehensive drivetrain maintenance visit. With approximately 85,000 miles on the truck, the owner wanted to address several important fluids before wear, contamination, or neglected maintenance had the opportunity to contribute to more expensive problems.
The requested work included a transmission pan drop and filter replacement, fresh transmission fluid, front and rear differential services, transfer case fluid replacement, and a fuel induction service.
This was not a transmission flush. Instead, the transmission pan was removed so the filter and pan gasket could be replaced before the transmission was refilled with the correct fluid.

This 2021 GMC Sierra 1500 was placed on the lift for transmission, transfer case, and front and rear differential fluid maintenance at our Norman, Oklahoma repair shop.
Drivetrain Maintenance for a 4WD GMC Sierra
A four-wheel-drive GMC Sierra has more drivetrain components requiring fluid than a typical two-wheel-drive vehicle. In addition to the engine and transmission, this truck has:
- A front differential
- A rear differential
- A transfer case
Each assembly uses a specific fluid to lubricate gears, bearings, clutches, chains, or other internal components. Over time, heat and normal operation can cause these fluids to deteriorate. The fluid may also collect fine metallic material and other contaminants as the components wear normally.
That does not automatically mean something is wrong. It does mean the fluids should not be ignored indefinitely.
Owners searching for GMC Sierra maintenance around 80,000 or 90,000 miles are often beginning to consider these services, particularly when the truck is used for towing, hauling, frequent four-wheel-drive operation, short trips, or other demanding conditions.
2021 GMC Sierra Transmission Pan and Filter Service
For the transmission service on this Sierra, we removed the transmission pan and replaced the transmission filter and pan gasket. The transmission was then refilled using the correct Dexron HP transmission fluid.
A transmission pan drop and filter replacement is different from a transmission flush.
During this type of service, the technician physically removes the pan from the bottom of the transmission. This provides access to the transmission filter and allows the technician to inspect the pan and surrounding area while completing the service.
The transmission filter helps prevent debris from circulating through the transmission. As mileage accumulates, the filter and fluid can become increasingly contaminated. Replacing the filter helps maintain proper fluid circulation and protects sensitive internal components.
Because only the fluid that drains during pan removal is replaced, a pan-drop service does not necessarily exchange every ounce of fluid contained throughout the transmission, torque converter, cooler, and transmission lines. However, it allows the filter to be replaced, which a simple fluid exchange does not always accomplish.
For this GMC Sierra, the owner specifically requested:
- Transmission pan removal
- Transmission filter replacement
- Transmission pan gasket replacement
- Transmission fluid replacement
- No transmission flush

Our technician services the transmission underneath the 2021 GMC Sierra 1500. Removing the transmission pan provides access to the filter and allows the pan gasket to be replaced.
Front and Rear Differential Fluid Service
We drained and refilled both the front and rear differentials with the correct gear oil. The differential cover gaskets were also replaced where needed.
Fresh differential fluid helps protect the internal gears and bearings, especially in trucks used for towing, hauling, or frequent four-wheel-drive operation
GMC Sierra Transfer Case Fluid Service
The transfer case has its own fluid, separate from the transmission. We drained the old transfer case fluid and refilled it with the correct GM-specified fluid.
Transfer case service is an important part of GMC Sierra 4WD maintenance, but it is often overlooked until a leak, noise, or four-wheel-drive problem develops.
Fuel Induction Service for the 5.3L V8
This Sierra also received a fuel induction service, including throttle body cleaning. This helps remove deposits that may contribute to rough idle, hesitation, reduced throttle response, or decreased fuel economy.
GMC Sierra Maintenance Around 85,000 Miles
At approximately 85,000 miles, the owner chose to complete several important maintenance services during one visit:
- Transmission pan, filter, gasket, and fluid service
- Front and rear differential fluid service
- Transfer case fluid replacement
- Fuel induction and throttle body cleaning
This truck did not arrive with a failed transmission or four-wheel-drive system. The owner was taking care of the drivetrain before neglected fluids had a chance to cause unnecessary wear.
