It Started With an A/C System Blowing Hot
The customer brought this 2018 Buick Enclave to us because the air conditioning was blowing hot. During the initial inspection, we found the A/C system was almost completely empty of refrigerant.
When an A/C system is that low, simply adding refrigerant is not a repair. Refrigerant operates in a sealed system, so if it is missing, there is a leak somewhere that needs to be located.
Our technician inspected the system for visible evidence of leakage, including the components under the hood and the evaporator drain area. We then added enough refrigerant to operate and test the system and used an electronic refrigerant leak detector to help pinpoint the source.
Finding the A/C Refrigerant Leak Behind the Dashboard
The electronic leak detector indicated refrigerant at the evaporator drain. That is an important clue because the evaporator core itself is located inside the HVAC housing, buried behind the dashboard.
Once the evaporator core was removed, the source of the refrigerant loss became clearly visible. The yellow-green staining on the core is leak-detection dye that traveled with the refrigerant and escaped at the leaking portion of the evaporator.
This is why proper A/C diagnosis matters. A vehicle can arrive simply “blowing hot,” but there are many possible causes — compressor problems, electrical faults, pressure sensors, refrigerant leaks, condenser problems, expansion devices and more. Testing allows us to determine what has actually failed before replacing parts.
Why Is an Evaporator Core Replacement Such a Big Job?
The evaporator core itself doesn't look particularly intimidating once it is sitting on a workbench.
The problem is where the manufacturer puts it.
The evaporator sits inside the HVAC case behind the instrument panel. On this Buick Enclave, reaching it requires extensive interior disassembly. Trim panels, electronic components, the center console area, portions of the dashboard and other assemblies must be carefully removed or moved out of the way before the HVAC housing can be accessed.
That is where most of the labor involved in an evaporator core replacement comes from.
This is also one of those repairs where a photograph explains the labor better than a labor guide ever could. Once the interior is opened up, it becomes obvious that replacing the evaporator core is much more involved than simply removing one A/C component and installing another.

With the dashboard out of the way, the technician can finally reach the HVAC housing containing the evaporator core. Getting to this point requires keeping track of a large number of fasteners, electrical connectors, trim pieces and interior components that all have to go back exactly where they belong.
The final step isn't simply making sure the dash looks right again. The repaired A/C system also needs to be operated and tested to verify that it is cooling properly and that the refrigerant system is functioning as expected.
