Leaking Axle Seal Ruined the Brakes on This 2008 Ford Ranger – But We Brought It Back Strong

Expert Rear Brake Repair & Axle Seal Replacement in Norman, OK – Keeping Your Older Truck Reliable Without the New Truck Price Tag

If you own an older truck, you already know the truth: keeping a good, reliable vehicle on the road is often smarter than buying brand new. That’s exactly the situation we had with a customer’s 2008 Ford Ranger XLT here at PROFIX Auto Repair in Norman, OK.

This truck has been driven coast-to-coast and is still going strong — but a leaking rear axle seal turned into a much bigger problem.

Over time, gear oil had leaked past the axle seal and completely contaminated the driver’s side rear drum brake. The oil coated the shoes, drum, springs, and wheel cylinder, destroying the braking performance on that side. Instead of just fixing one side, our team did what’s right: we serviced both rear sides so everything would be matched and reliable.

Here’s what the driver’s side looked like when we started:

Rough shape. Dirty, baked in sludge.

You can see how thick the black gear oil sludge was — it had baked onto everything. The drum, hardware, and shoes were in rough shape.

We removed the contaminated brake shoes, drums, and hardware, thoroughly cleaned the backing plate, and replaced the leaking axle seal on both sides (along with fresh gear oil). Then we installed new brake shoes, new premium drums, new wheel cylinders, and all new hardware on both rear wheels.

Here’s the same side after the rebuild:

Clean, fresh, and ready for many more miles.

While we were already deep into the truck, we also took care of several other items the customer wanted addressed:

  • Complete front brake service (pads + rotors)
  • New rear wheel stud
  • Stabilizer bar links
  • Oil change
  • A/C service and recharge
  • Driver’s side door handle
  • Brake fluid flush

That sounds like a lot for an 18-year-old truck — until you compare it to today’s new truck prices. A brand new full-size pickup can easily run $60,000–$80,000 (plus much higher insurance and taxes). Investing in quality repairs to keep a solid, paid-off truck on the road can be a smart decision.

This customer loves his truck and wants to keep it running safely and reliably. We’re happy to help him do exactly that here at PROFIX Auto Repair in Norman, OK.

The takeaway?

Don’t give up on your older truck just because something big comes up. A leaking axle seal, worn brakes, or other common issues can often be fixed for far less than a new vehicle. With the right parts and proper repairs, many of these trucks still have plenty of good miles left.

If your truck (or SUV) is showing warning signs — unusual noises, pulling, leaks, or brake issues — bring it in to PROFIX Auto Repair. Your reliable old truck might just have more life in it than you think.
