Ford F-250 Ball Joint & Suspension Repair in Norman, OK

When an older heavy-duty truck starts developing front-end noise, looseness, or a rough ride, there can be more than one worn suspension component involved. That was the case with this 2004 Ford F-250 Super Duty that recently came into PROFIX Auto Repair in Norman, Oklahoma with more than 167,000 miles on the odometer.

During our inspection, we found several issues in the front suspension that needed attention, including worn upper and lower ball joints on both sides, a leaking front shock, and deteriorated leaf-spring bushing material .

What We Found During the F-250 Inspection

The customer reported that the truck was riding rough and that there was noise coming from the front end. Our technician inspected the suspension and found play in both the upper and lower ball joints on the left and right sides .

Ball joints connect the steering knuckle to the suspension while still allowing the wheels to move up and down and turn with the steering. Because they carry substantial loads on a truck like an F-250, wear can eventually create looseness in the front suspension.

We also found that the left front shock was leaking . In addition, material from the left front leaf-spring bushing/insulator was missing , allowing portions of the spring assembly to contact each other.

Those findings explained why this truck needed more than a simple shock replacement.

Replacing Upper and Lower Ball Joints on a Ford F-250

On this truck, all four front ball joints — both upper and lower ball joints on both sides — were replaced.

Ball-joint replacement on an F-250 is a substantial front-end repair. The wheel and brake components have to be removed and the steering knuckle disassembled far enough to access the ball joints.

This is also why diagnosing front-end noise before simply replacing parts is important. Several suspension and steering components can produce similar symptoms, particularly on an older truck with higher mileage.

Once the suspension was apart, our technician could remove the worn ball joints and install the new components.

Excessive ball-joint play can contribute to symptoms such as:

Clunking or knocking from the front suspension
Loose or wandering steering

2016 Toyota Camry Fuel Door Would Not Open in Norman, OK

A broken fuel-door release switch left this Toyota Camry unable to access the gas cap, requiring careful diagnosis and replacement of the combined fuel-door and trunk-release switch assembly.

A fuel door that will not open may sound like a minor inconvenience—until the vehicle needs gasoline. That was the problem with this 2016 Toyota Camry XSE brought to our Norman, Oklahoma, auto repair shop. The customer could pull the interior release switch, but the fuel door remained closed.

Because several different problems can cause a Toyota Camry gas door to become stuck, our technician began by confirming the complaint and testing the release system rather than immediately replacing parts.

Diagnosing the Stuck Fuel Door

When the technician pulled the fuel-door release switch, there was no normal tension or resistance. That indicated a problem somewhere in the release mechanism.

However, a lack of tension does not automatically prove that the interior switch is the only problem. A stuck fuel door can also be caused by:

A damaged fuel-door latch
A disconnected or broken release cable
A binding hinge or fuel door
Damage inside the release-switch assembly

To determine whether the fuel door itself was stuck, the technician carefully gained access behind the fuel-door area and confirmed that the door could be opened manually. This showed that the exterior door and hinge were capable of moving normally.

The interior release switch was then removed and inspected. Testing confirmed that the switch assembly was broken.

Combined Fuel-Door and Trunk-Release Switch

On this Toyota Camry, the fuel-door release and trunk-release controls are contained within the same switch assembly. That meant the correct repair was to replace the complete unit rather than attempting to repair only the fuel-door portion of the switch.

Once the replacement Toyota fuel-door release switch arrived, the old assembly could be removed and the new switch installed. The system would then be retested to verify that both the fuel door and trunk release operated properly.

Replacing the complete assembly restores the normal tension and movement the driver should feel when operating the release controls.

Why Proper Diagnosis Matters

When a Toyota Camry fuel door will not open, it can be tempting to force the exterior door open. However, prying against the painted fuel door can bend the door, damage the hinge, break the latch, or chip the vehicle’s paint.

The source of the problem may be located inside the vehicle rather than at the fuel door itself. Proper testing helps determine whether the fault is in the switch, cable, latch, or door mechanism before additional damage occurs.

In this case, the technician confirmed that the fuel door itself could open and traced the problem back to the broken interior switch assembly.

Additional Items Found During the Inspection

As part of the visit, the Camry also received our standard vehicle inspection. The technician documented several additional maintenance and repair items for the customer, including worn wiper blades, a dirty engine air filter, a burned-out license-plate bulb, tire wear, a leaking front CV axle, and brake fluid that was due for service.

2019 Volkswagen Atlas Brakes, Tires and Maintenance in Norman, OK

A 2019 Volkswagen Atlas SEL recently visited Leon’s PROFIX Auto Repair in Norman with a little over 60,000 miles. The owner knew it was time for several important maintenance items, including new tires, brake service, a wheel alignment and an oil change.

After completing our inspection, we confirmed that the Atlas needed both front and rear brake work. We also found aging tires, a dirty engine air filter and several routine maintenance items that needed attention.

This 2019 Volkswagen Atlas visited Leon’s PROFIX Auto Repair in Norman for brake replacement, new tires, an alignment and routine maintenance at approximately 60,000 miles.

Volkswagen Atlas Brake Inspection

During the inspection, the front brake pads were found to be nearly worn down to the metal. Waiting much longer could have caused additional damage and reduced braking performance.

The rear brakes still had a small amount of material remaining, but they were estimated at approximately 15 to 20 percent. Since the vehicle was already being serviced and the rear brakes were nearing the end of their usable life, the owner chose to replace them as well.

We replaced the front and rear brake pads and rotors, cleaned and lubricated the appropriate brake components and test-drove the Atlas after the repairs.

The Atlas also needed a new set of tires. Tread measurements were getting lower, and dry rot was beginning to appear on one of the rear tires.

Four new Pirelli Scorpion all-season tires were installed, mounted and balanced. A four-wheel alignment was then completed to help the new tires wear evenly and keep the vehicle tracking properly.

Replacing worn tires without correcting an alignment problem can lead to premature tire wear. Completing both services together helps protect the investment in the new tires.

Oil Change and Engine Air Filter Replacement

This visit also included a full-synthetic oil change using the proper European-specification motor oil and a quality oil filter.

The engine air filter was found to be dirty and was replaced. A clean air filter helps prevent dirt and debris from entering the engine while allowing proper airflow.

A 2021 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT with the 5.3-liter V8 and four-wheel drive recently came into our Norman, Oklahoma auto repair shop for a comprehensive drivetrain maintenance visit. With approximately 85,000 miles on the truck, the owner wanted to address several important fluids before wear, contamination, or neglected maintenance had the opportunity to contribute to more expensive problems.

The requested work included a transmission pan drop and filter replacement, fresh transmission fluid, front and rear differential services, transfer case fluid replacement, and a fuel induction service.

This was not a transmission flush. Instead, the transmission pan was removed so the filter and pan gasket could be replaced before the transmission was refilled with the correct fluid.

Each assembly uses a specific fluid to lubricate gears, bearings, clutches, chains, or other internal components. Over time, heat and normal operation can cause these fluids to deteriorate. The fluid may also collect fine metallic material and other contaminants as the components wear normally.

2021 GMC Sierra Transmission Pan and Filter Service

For the transmission service on this Sierra, we removed the transmission pan and replaced the transmission filter and pan gasket. The transmission was then refilled using the correct Dexron HP transmission fluid.

A transmission pan drop and filter replacement is different from a transmission flush.

During this type of service, the technician physically removes the pan from the bottom of the transmission. This provides access to the transmission filter and allows the technician to inspect the pan and surrounding area while completing the service.

The transmission filter helps prevent debris from circulating through the transmission. As mileage accumulates, the filter and fluid can become increasingly contaminated. Replacing the filter helps maintain proper fluid circulation and protects sensitive internal components.

Because only the fluid that drains during pan removal is replaced, a pan-drop service does not necessarily exchange every ounce of fluid contained throughout the transmission, torque converter, cooler, and transmission lines. However, it allows the filter to be replaced, which a simple fluid exchange does not always accomplish.

Hybrid Front-End Repair: Active Shutters, EV Coolant System & More on a Fusion SE Hybrid

Most mechanical shops will look at a front-end hit on a hybrid and send it down the road. Not us. At Leon's PROFIX Auto Repair in Norman, we are ready to take this one on.

A 2014 Ford Fusion SE Hybrid came in with clear front-end damage. No paint work needed — the outer panels were fine — but the mechanical package behind the bumper was a different story. Once we pulled the front end apart we saw exactly what these cars tend to break in a moderate hit:

We replaced the full set of damaged components: front engine shield, lower core support, active shutter assembly, EV coolant/transmission cooler, radiator, A/C condenser, electric coolant pump, and fan shroud, along with the necessary clips, coolant, dye, and refrigerant.

After the mechanical work we performed a full coolant system air purge and an A/C service and performance test so the vehicle left with both the engine and hybrid cooling systems, plus the air conditioning, fully restored .

2017 BMW X3 Lights That Wouldn’t Turn Off: Diagnosing a LIN Bus Wiring Nightmare (and Keeping a High-Mileage X3 Running Strong)

When a customer’s dash lights refuse to go out—even with the switch in the off position—it’s more than an annoyance. On a 2017 BMW X3 sDrive28i with over 180,000 miles, it pointed to a deeper communication problem in the LIN bus network. That’s exactly what this BMW into Profix Auto Repair in Norman.

We see these intermittent electrical ghosts on European cars regularly at PROFIX Auto Repair in Norman, OK. They rarely have a single smoking-gun cause. This one involved corroded connectors, a damaged LIN wire, a short in the rear bumper area, and a parking-assist module that had developed an internal short. Here’s how we sorted it out, what else we found, and why the car left running clean and quieter than when it arrived.

The Starting Complaint

The lights would not shut off. Pulling codes revealed LIN bus communication faults. An actuation test confirmed the light switch itself worked, but live data showed certain lights remaining commanded on even when the switch was off. Power and ground were present at the switch connector, yet the LIN signal was weak or missing. That pointed us toward the driver-assistance wiring and related modules.

Tracing the Faults

After that repair, the lights came back on again. Live testing isolated the driver parking-assist module itself as the new source of the short. With the module disconnected, the lights stayed off and the rest of the system behaved normally. The customer was given the option to replace the module later for a complete permanent fix; for now the car is usable without the faulty circuit pulling the network down.

This kind of layered electrical diagnosis is common on older BMWs.

LIN bus networks are efficient when everything is clean and dry. Once corrosion, broken strands, or a shorted module enter the picture, one fault can cascade into multiple codes and strange light behavior. Throwing parts at it rarely works. Methodical testing—codes, live data, power/ground checks, and visual inspection of the harnesses—saves time and money.

Maintenance That Made Sense at 180k Miles

While the car was in for the electrical work we performed a full 27-point inspection and addressed the items that actually needed attention:

Full synthetic oil change with the correct 0W-20 and a quality filter.
Engine air filter and cabin filter replacement. Both were dirty.
BG brake fluid flush. The fluid tested acceptable on a strip, but BMW’s interval is two years or 30,000 miles and the last service was overdue. Fresh fluid protects the ABS and electronic parking-brake components that are expensive when they fail.

Brake pads and rotors still had usable life (fronts around 25 %, rears around 40 %), and the tires were uneven but not immediate safety hazards. We noted everything so the customer could plan the next services without surprises .

When the air conditioning stops working properly in a passenger car, the system is usually fairly straightforward. On a commercial shuttle bus, things can get considerably more complicated.

We recently had Bethel Baptist Church’s 2007 GMC C5500 TopKick shuttle bus in our Norman shop with an unusual A/C complaint: the front A/C was blowing cold, but the rear system was moving air without getting cold.

Because this bus carries a much larger passenger compartment than a typical vehicle, its air-conditioning system uses additional equipment throughout the body of the bus. Diagnosing it means looking beyond the components normally found under the hood.

Shuttle Bus A/C Is Very Different From Passenger-Car A/C

The GMC C5500 provides the chassis and drivetrain, but a shuttle-bus body requires considerably more cooling capacity than the original cab alone.

This particular bus has auxiliary A/C equipment serving different areas of the passenger compartment , along with multiple condenser fans and additional electrical controls.

That means the front vents can be producing cold air while another portion of the system is not operating correctly.

For fleet operators, churches, shuttle services and other organizations using commercial passenger vehicles, that distinction matters. A partially working A/C system does not necessarily mean the entire system is healthy.

A Much Larger A/C System

One of the first indications of just how different this vehicle is came during the A/C service itself.

The system specification called for approximately 7.5 pounds of refrigerant . By comparison, a normal passenger vehicle typically uses a fraction of that amount.

During service, only about 0.66 pound was recovered from the system.

After evacuating and recharging the system to the correct specification, however, another problem quickly became apparent.

The high-side pressure climbed above 350 PSI within roughly 45 seconds of startup .

That is not something we want to ignore.

Excessively high pressure can indicate that the system is having difficulty releasing heat. Possible causes can include restricted airflow across a condenser, condenser fan problems, restrictions within the refrigerant circuit or other faults.

Instead of simply assuming the bus needed refrigerant, the next step was to determine why the pressure was climbing so rapidly .

Why Does This Bus Have So Many Condensers and Fans?

This is one of the most interesting parts of the vehicle.

A condenser's job is to remove heat from the refrigerant after that heat has been absorbed from inside the vehicle. On a normal car or SUV, the primary condenser is generally mounted at the front of the vehicle where airflow can pass through it.

A shuttle bus has an enormous interior volume by comparison.

Keeping dozens of feet of passenger compartment cool in an Oklahoma summer requires far more heat-rejection capacity, so the auxiliary A/C system uses additional condenser sections and electric fans .

Those components can be seen behind the vented panels along the lower side of this bus.

If those condenser fans stop operating, airflow through the condenser can be reduced dramatically.

The refrigerant may still be circulating, and part of the vehicle may even continue producing cold air, but the system can no longer reject heat the way it was designed to.

That can send high-side pressure upward very quickly.

Front A/C Cold, Rear A/C Warm

The original complaint on this bus was particularly useful diagnostically.

The front A/C was cooling , while the rear blower was operating but the air was not getting cold .

This tells us something important: airflow and refrigeration are two different things.

A blower fan can work perfectly well while the refrigerant side of that section of the system is not doing its job.

This bus has additional HVAC equipment mounted above the cab area.

This is why diagnosing a complaint such as “the front A/C works but the rear A/C doesn't” requires more than simply checking whether the compressor turns on.

Several different pieces of the system have to work together.

Finding a Condenser Fan Problem

While inspecting the condenser assemblies during testing, we found that the rearmost condenser fans were not operating .

That immediately provided a possible explanation for the rapidly increasing high-side pressure.

Without proper airflow across those condensers, the system cannot efficiently shed the heat being carried by the refrigerant.

At that point, the diagnosis moves from the refrigeration side of the system into the electrical side.

The question becomes:

Why aren't the fans running?

The fan motors themselves could be faulty, but the problem can also involve relays, fuses, wiring, power supply, grounds or the controls responsible for commanding the fans on.

This shuttle bus has a dedicated electrical distribution setup containing multiple relays and high-amperage fuses for its auxiliary equipment.

This is where proper diagnosis matters.

Replacing parts based solely on a symptom can become very expensive on a vehicle with this many individual A/C components. The better approach is to determine exactly where the electrical circuit is failing before recommending the repair.

Why Fleet A/C Problems Require a Different Approach

Fleet and commercial vehicles frequently contain equipment that simply does not exist on ordinary passenger cars.

Depending on the vehicle, we may encounter:

Additional evaporators and blower assemblies
Multiple condensers and electric condenser fans
Long refrigerant lines running through the vehicle
Separate relay and fuse panels
Body-builder or aftermarket electrical systems
Multiple passenger cooling zones
Much larger refrigerant capacities

That is why a commercial A/C complaint can require both air-conditioning diagnostics and electrical diagnostics before the actual cause is identified.

A system like this also demonstrates why simply adding refrigerant is not an adequate diagnosis.

If a condenser fan isn't operating, adding refrigerant isn't going to repair the fan circuit — and continuing to run a system with excessive pressure can create additional problems.

Why Proper Diagnosis Makes All the Difference

When an A/C Compressor Fails From the Inside: 2015 Toyota Sienna A/C Repair

A grinding noise and unstable engine speed led us to a locked compressor—and metal contamination throughout a front-and-rear air-conditioning system.

When a vehicle’s air conditioning stops blowing cold, it can be tempting to assume it simply needs refrigerant. However, unusual noises or changes in the way the engine runs when the A/C is switched on can indicate a much more serious mechanical problem.

A 2015 Toyota Sienna XLE recently came to PROFIX Auto Repair with an especially concerning set of symptoms. The A/C had not been cooling as well as it should, and whenever it was turned on, the engine speed would surge and drop while a grinding noise came from under the hood.

This was not a situation where adding refrigerant was going to solve the problem.

Reaching the rear A/C components in this Toyota Sienna required extensive interior disassembly.

Diagnosing the Grinding Noise

We began by confirming the customer’s concern and observing what happened when the air conditioning was activated.

When the A/C compressor attempted to engage, the compressor clutch would slip and the engine would struggle under the added load. The compressor could not be rotated by hand, confirming that it had locked up internally.

That explained both major symptoms. The grinding was coming from the compressor area, while the engine speed changed because the engine was attempting to turn a compressor that was no longer able to rotate normally.

At this point, we knew the compressor had failed. The next question was whether the damage was limited to the compressor—or whether the failure had affected the rest of the system.

Finding Metal Inside the A/C System

After recovering the refrigerant and disconnecting the lines at the compressor, we found metal debris inside the air-conditioning system.

That discovery completely changed the scope of the repair.

An A/C compressor contains moving internal parts and circulates refrigerant and oil throughout the system. When a compressor fails mechanically from the inside, small metal particles can be carried into the refrigerant lines, condenser and expansion valves.

Installing a new compressor without addressing that contamination would leave damaging debris inside the system. The replacement compressor would then be exposed to the same metal that came from the original failure.

In other words, replacing only the visibly failed component would not have been a complete repair.

Why This Sienna Was More Complicated

This Toyota Sienna is equipped with both front and rear air conditioning. That is an important distinction because the refrigerant must travel through a larger system with additional lines and components.

The vehicle uses expansion valves to control refrigerant flow through both the front and rear portions of the A/C system. Because metal had circulated through and contaminated the entire system, both expansion valves had to be replaced along with the compressor, condenser and affected refrigerant lines.

The front portion of the system could be accessed in a fairly familiar location. Reaching the rear expansion valve was a different story.

Much of the passenger-side rear interior is carefully removed to reach the rear HVAC components.

Accessing the Rear A/C Components

The photographs tell this part of the story better than a simple list of labor operations ever could.

To access the rear A/C system, several interior trim panels and components had to be carefully removed from the passenger side of the van. This exposed the rear HVAC case and allowed our technician to reach the rear expansion valve.

Every panel, electrical connector, fastener and interior component had to be removed without causing damage and then correctly reinstalled after the A/C work was completed.

This is why two repairs that sound similar on paper can involve very different amounts of work. Replacing an expansion valve near the front of a vehicle is not the same as replacing one buried behind the rear interior of a minivan.

With the interior removed, the rear HVAC housing and refrigerant connections could finally be accessed.

Completing the A/C Repair Properly

The complete repair included replacing the locked A/C compressor, the condenser assembly, and the front and rear expansion valves. The serviceable refrigerant lines were flushed to remove remaining contamination before the system was reassembled.

Once everything was back together, the system had to be evacuated. Evacuation removes air and moisture and also allows the system to be checked before the correct amount of refrigerant is installed.

This was considerably more involved than simply removing one compressor and installing another, but the additional work was necessary because of what we found inside the system.

The goal was not merely to make the A/C blow cold temporarily. It was to remove the source of the failure, address the contamination it created and give the replacement components a clean system in which to operate.

What Drivers Should Know About A/C Compressor Failure

A failing compressor does not always begin with a complete loss of air conditioning. Early warning signs may include:

Cooling that gradually becomes less effective
Grinding, rattling or scraping when the A/C is activated
Engine speed dropping or fluctuating when the compressor engages
A belt squeal or unusual noise from under the hood
The engine feeling as though it may stall when the A/C is turned on

Continuing to operate an A/C system that is making mechanical noises can allow a deteriorating compressor to create additional damage. Once metal enters the system, what might have begun as one failed component can become a much more extensive repair.

Of course, not every warm-air complaint means the compressor has failed. Low refrigerant, electrical problems, cooling-fan issues, restrictions and faulty controls can all cause poor A/C performance. That is why proper testing comes before recommending parts.

Toyota Sienna A/C Repair in Norman, Oklahoma

This 2015 Toyota Sienna is a good example of why the first failed part is not always the entire story.

The locked compressor explained the grinding noise and unstable engine speed, but opening the system revealed the more important issue: metal contamination had traveled beyond the compressor itself. Because the Sienna has front and rear air conditioning, completing the repair also meant accessing components hidden behind the rear interior.

Customer Came In With a Scary Brake Pedal Issue – What We Found Was Serious

This customer was driving back home to Houston when his truck broke down off the interstate near Norman. The brake pedal was going nearly all the way to the floor , and he could feel something seriously wrong with the front end.

He called us, explained the situation, and asked if we could work directly with his fleet manager. We said yes immediately. His truck was towed in, we diagnosed the issue quickly, ordered parts, and had him safely back on the highway by 4:00 PM .

At PROFIX Auto Repair in Norman, OK, no job is too big. We recently completed a full engine swap on a 2018 Audi S5 equipped with the 3.0T supercharged engine. The customer brought the car in with a flashing check engine light, sluggish performance, and a noticeable rough idle. Despite new spark plugs and a coil on cylinder 6, the issue remained. This job is a great example of the kind of complex European performance repairs we handle regularly at our shop.

From routine maintenance to major engine work, our team has the experience, tools, and facility to take on whatever comes through the door — no job is too big or too involved.

Thorough Diagnosis

We started with a full diagnostic scan and live data monitoring . This quickly confirmed an active misfire on cylinder 6. A compression test provided the critical numbers: cylinder 6 measured only 124 psi, while the other cylinders sat at a healthy 198 psi. For this engine, the minimum specification is 145 psi with a maximum allowable difference of 43.5 psi between cylinders. Cylinder 6 was clearly outside those parameters.

Next, we performed a borescope inspection of cylinder 6. The images showed slight scoring on the cylinder wall and carbon buildup on the valves. These findings, combined with the compression loss, made it clear that a simple repair — such as replacing injectors, rings, or attempting a partial rebuild — would not deliver a reliable long-term solution.

We documented everything step by step and conducted an additional borescope check for confirmation so the customer had a complete picture. After reviewing the results, we recommended proceeding with a full engine replacement.

The Engine Swap Process

We began the main repair by removing the original engine and installing a fresh replacement unit. The B9-generation S5 has a very tightly packaged engine bay, and this is a labor-intensive job that requires careful disassembly and reassembly of multiple systems.

Technician Mark led the work, which included:

Complete removal and replacement of the engine
Installing an intercooler
Transferring all accessory components, wiring harnesses, intake manifold, exhaust manifold, turbo setup, and supporting systems
Installation of a full gasket set
New Audi thermostatic valve O-rings, seal rings, washers, and oil return line
Replacement of all six NGK spark plugs
Full engine oil and filter service
Complete coolant system air purge

Tesla Toolbox 3 in Action: Fixing a Contaminated Tesla Model X A/C System at PROFIX Auto Repair in Norman

At PROFIX Auto Repair in Oklahoma City, we see a lot of Tesla repair jobs — and unfortunately, many of them start with a simple DIY mistake that turns into a much bigger (and more expensive) problem.

This Tesla Model X is the perfect example.

Part 1: How a Simple Leak Turned Into a Major Issue

The customer’s A/C wasn’t blowing cold enough, so he attempted a DIY repair by adding an off the shelf coolant recharge can, purchased from the auto parts store. What he didn’t realize was that the real issue was just a small leak — something that would have been an inexpensive, straightforward O-ring repair.

Unfortunately, the off-the-shelf recharge kit contained incompatible oils and conditioners that cannot be used in Electric Vehicles. This contaminated the entire thermal management system, triggered isolation faults in the high-voltage compressor, and caused the car to completely shut down.

As our technician explains in the first video:

“This one is disappointing for the customer because he had a simple leak in his air conditioning and he bought the consumer Freon fill… And unfortunately, this one has oils and conditioners in it. The oil that's in this is not compatible with electric cars.”

Because the oil in the off-the-shelf kit is conductive , it caused isolation faults in the high-voltage A/C compressor (running at 400 volts). What started as a minor leak quickly escalated into a complete system contamination that shut down parts of the vehicle.

The rear drive unit in older Teslas model X and S have a costly design problem. Many Tesla Model S and Model X vehicles made from 2012 to 2020 have the Large Drive Unit (LDU), which has a guaranteed leaking rotor coolant seal. This seal, located around the electric motor rotor shaft, will fail and allow coolant to seep into the motor. Over time, every one of these will leak. Tesla tried various fixes to prevent this, then introduced ‘Revision U’ of the LDU in late 2022. This versionor reroutes coolant away from the rotor while continuing to cooling the inverter, stator, and gearbox through the flyover tube. This is a good and permanent fix.

This issue impacts ALL rear-wheel-drive models (including non-performance RWD ones) and all Performance (P-series) dual-motor variants. The non-performance dual-motor models use a different rear unit without this flaw. While Performance and non-performance LDUs differ in their inverters, they share the same leaky seal. Only the NON-PERFORMANCE DUAL-MOTOR vehicles have the ‘small drive unit’ that’s immune to this. Newer Model 3/Y and the latest S/X do not leak coolant into the stator.

If you own an impacted vehicle, make it a habit to inspect the encoder (or speed) sensor for signs of blue coolant buildup. It’s a straightforward inspection. If yours is leaking, act quickly to get it fixed before the motor floods and the car becomes undrivable. We perform this inspection for $49.

Pre Revision U LDU’s can be modified to have the Revision U fix. This is known as the coolant delete. What is AFM? – Active Fuel Management (AFM)

Active Fuel Management (AFM) is a technology developed by General Motors (GM) designed to improve fuel efficiency in certain engines. It works by deactivating half of the engine’s cylinders when full power isn’t needed, such as during highway cruising or light acceleration. This helps reduce fuel consumption by using fewer cylinders, and then reactivating them when more power is required, like during heavy acceleration. AFM is typically found in V6 and V8 engines, providing a balance between performance and fuel efficiency.
While Active Fuel Management (AFM) can improve fuel efficiency, it can come with issues, including:

Lifter and Valve Train Wear: The AFM system relies on deactivating and reactivating cylinders, which puts additional stress on the lifters and valve components. Over time, this can lead to premature wear and potential engine noise or even failure of the AFM components.
Oil Consumption: AFM can cause increased oil consumption in some engines. This happens because the lifters used in the AFM system may not seal perfectly, allowing oil to escape into the combustion chamber, which can lead to engine knocking or damage over time.
Activation/Deactivation Issues: The system’s transitions between active and deactivated cylinders need to be smooth, but sometimes the transitions can cause hesitation, rough idling, or a noticeable change in engine performance. This can be frustrating for drivers who notice it.

You might ask, what can I do to help prevent such issues from happening? To try and help ensure that your engine runs as smoothly as possible, stay on top of regular maintenance. Because AFM can increase oil consumption, regular oil changes with high-quality oil will help keep the engine lubricated properly. With that being said, it won’t hurt to monitor oil levels as well by checking the oil level on the dipstick. If you do hear unusual engine noise or have a check engine light on, do not let it linger. Take it in to get it looked at. The longer you wait, the more costly it could become. What vehicles are affected by AFM and how do I know if my GM vehicle has it? GM (General Motors) products are most notoriously impacted by AFM. These include Chevrolet, GMC, Cadillac, and Buick, primarily with V8 and V6 engines. Most often found in larger, more performance-oriented, fuel-hungry vehicles such as trucks and full-size SUVs where it helps improve fuel efficiency.
